My background

During my Bachelor's degree, I was inspired by a lecturer. His clear and easy to understand lecturing has ignited my interest in the antenna design. After that, I had taken up his final year project and successfully published two international journal papers. Besides that, I had also won the second place in the IEEE Malaysia Final Year Project competition under the telecommunication track. Due to my curiosity in antenna design and the satisfaction from solving problems, I decided to pursue my Master's and Ph.D.'s degrees at UTAR. Currently, I have published four international journal papers, one of which is in the IEEE Transactions, and two conference papers.


After the graduation of my Diploma's degree, I have selected UTAR to be the only institution for further study because of its affordable tuition fees and it is well known for producing quality and qualified students. I enrolled myself in the course of Electronic and Communications Engineering because I found that this course is very interesting and wish to gain more technical knowledge in this field.

Current research

My current research is about designing radio frequency identification (RFID) tag, which is a type of antenna. Genetic algorithm will be incorporated into the design of RFID tag for optimizing the performances of the antenna. Currently, RFID technology has been found useful in many applications such as asset identification, animal tracking, and access control. Comparing with the conventional barcode, the RFID tags have smaller footprint, longer reading range, and are able to store more information. In the future, the barcode technology will be fully replaced by the RFID.

Best and worst bits

The best thing of my postgraduate is that I can access the IEEE Xplore and the Microwave and Optical Technology Letters databases easily from UTAR. Besides that, UTAR has a complete set of RF equipments and I have the opportunity to operate them. One of the challenges I encountered during my postgraduate is the conduction of experiments. When measuring the antenna performances, it is common that the antenna under test may not be working as expected. Several repetitions of measurements are often required. The process is actually very tiring but this does not demotivate me from completing my Ph.D.'s degree.

Career Advancement 

My ambition is to become a lecturer and I love doing research. By obtaining a Ph.D.'s degree, I am able to secure a job in universities for a lecturer position. At the same time, I can continue my research in antenna design and hope my research works can bring significant impact to the world.

Postgraduate or work?

I think it is better to work in the industry first before pursuing your postgraduate. In my opinion, working in the industry is tougher than studying in the university. After exposing yourself in the industry, you will appreciate your life in the university. As a result, you will have the motivation and determination in completing your postgraduate.


If you wish to pursue a postgraduate, ensure that you pick the right research topic based on your interest. Always stay positive and passionate for what you are doing. Do not easily give up and I believe you can achieve what you want.
