Universiti Tenaga Nasional (UNITEN) was established by Tenaga Nasional Berhad (TNB) in 1997 in response to a clarion call by the government to open a private university to support nation-building. Since then, UNITEN has been at the forefront of energy research, leveraging TNB’s solid industry experience - from power generation to transmission and distribution. UNITEN takes pride in its ability to synergize soft skills with engineering, information technology and business management knowledge to prepare professional graduates.
UNITEN is making a steady progress towards becoming the tertiary education institution of choice in the region. Apart from that, obtaining this Self-Accreditation Status implies the empowerment and trust laid upon UNITEN by MQA to certify its own courses.
The university has also improved its standing in university rankings. In the Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) Asian University Rankings, UNITEN is ranked 234th in 2019. The university also appears for the first time in the 2019 QS World University Rankings at #701-750 and in the 2019 QS Top 50 under 50 Rankings (World) at #101-150. Besides, the university has climbed up to the 255th position from 371st in the world in the 2018 QS World University Rankings by Subject in Engineering and Technology. In the Times Higher Education (THE) World University Rankings, UNITEN is ranked #801-1000 in 2019. Under the same ranking system, UNITEN is ranked 171st in Asia, 12th in ASEAN and 7th in Malaysia.
