Under the Coalition’s Victoria – Leader in Learning initiative, the Victorian Government will provide $20,000 per year for 3 years for each of these scholarships which, together with support provided by the host Victorian universities are valued at AUD$90,000 (approximately RM290,400.00) per student.

The Malaysian winner, Jie Yen Fan is currently pursuing her PhD at Monash University in the field of mathematical sciences. Her research aims to develop a new family of complex mathematical proof models that could shed light to the behaviour of financial systems. In response to the scholarship award, she applauds the Victorian Government for their initiative to help international students especially research students.

“The scholarships are a key component of Victoria – Leader in Learninginitiative to support high calibre students to make the most of their educational experience in Victoria,” Innovation, Services and Small Business Minister Ms Asher said.

Ms Asher, who presented recipients with an award during a ceremony at the Parliament House, said the scholarship program supports high performing international scholars who have looked around the world for a top research environment and selected a Victorian university and supervisor for their doctorate research.

“These recipients are the first to benefit from the $1.2 million Victorian International Research Scholarship program which acknowledges the strength of Victorian universities in a variety of research fields,” Ms Asher said.

“Victoria is a world leader in infectious disease research, cancer research, stem cell research, neuroscience research, agricultural research and environmental and water technologies,” Ms Asher said.

“Research scholars come from all over the world to study these and other subjects at our universities and use our leading edge research facilities, world-renowned medical institutes and state-of-the art technology platforms.”

“Victoria’s international students make a significant contribution to Victoria’s diverse, multicultural society and create the foundation for future global research, business and community links,” Ms Asher said.

Victorian universities nominated their top international students and applications were assessed by a panel of experts.
