Research Programmes
Research at the University of Surrey is constantly pushing boundaries and bringing direct benefits to many spheres of life – helping industry to maintain its competitive edge and creating improvements in the areas of health, medicine, space science, the environment, communications, defence and social policy.
We have forged an independent approach to research and enterprise. Academic and technological excellence is strengthened by our ambitious approach, ensuring innovation and inventive engagement with industry and the professions providing distinct competitive advantage for those studying and working with us.
At Surrey we think it is important to provide support and guidance to research students at every stage of their work. Each student, whether working on their own or as part of a research team, has a personal supervisor to provide guidance in developing relevant lines of enquiry and ensuring that the programme progresses at the right pace in the right direction.
The University continues to be a strong advocate of multidisciplinary research, allowing researchers from different fields to work closely together, focusing on a key research initiative. These centres include: Advanced Technology Institute; Centre for Environmental Strategy; Digital World Research Centre; Food, Consumer Behaviour and Health Research Centre; Healthcare Workforce Research Centre; Surrey Sleep Research Centre; Research Group on Lifestyles, Values and Environment (RESOLVE); Centre for Research on Nationalism, Ethnicity and Multiculturalism; and Surrey Materials Institute.
Collaborative Programmes
MPhil and PhD programmes are available on a collaborative basis; your research may be on your employer’s premises and you are registered for a Surrey research degree. This offers a practical and inexpensive solution for those who find it hard to attend full-time.
Internationally recognised research
Surrey seeks to attract the very best researchers. We have supported the UK government’s initiative ‘Investing in Excellence’ to recruit world-leading research professors and talented research-active lecturers, by investing in the research programmes of 18 readers/professors and 17 other research staff.
The Surrey Research Park
The Surrey Research Park is renowned as a centre of excellence in the creation, support and growth of high technology companies. It is the larger of only two research parks in the country to be owned and managed by a university. The Research Park houses over 80 research-based companies ranging from newly established concerns to major multinationals.
Fees and Funding
Fees are payable for each academic year, or part thereof, or each stage of the programme, where fees are not payable on an annual basis. Fees are revised subject to annual review. Fees are payable by students continuing on programmes of study in subsequent years.
For some programmes of study, the University charges different fees, depending on a student's status as a 'home' or 'overseas' student. Further information on eligibility criteria and general guidance on fees classification is available from UKCISA (UK Council for International Student Affairs).
Financial support for UK/EU students
The major sources of financial support for most UK/EU students wishing to undertake research or advanced programmes at the University of Surrey are the appropriate research councils.
If you are uncertain which research council covers your area of study, contact either the research councils or the Faculty or Department at the University as early as possible.

Nationality: Japanese
Degree: English for University Studies
At this moment, I am taking an English Language Course at the University of Surrey before I start doing a postgraduate degree next year. The reason why I chose this university is mainly the location and the environment. Only 35 minutes' away from London appealed to me and there is everything you need in Guildford. Another reason that I chose Surrey, is the amount of attention from the staff. Before arriving here, I had contacted the staff by E-mail, they responded to my many questions immediately and politely every time. That was really impressive. And also ever since I started living here I have never been disappointed in my expectations. Though this is the first time I’ve come to UK, I can live my life comfortably. This university has the very best conditions for me. Surrounded by the excellent teachers, international students, nice flatmates, I am really satisfied with my life in this university.

Nationality: Chinese
Degree: PhD in Management
As a PhD student, what I appreciate the most is the wonderful supervisor that I have been given. His passion and love for research have taught me to understand the meaning of being a researcher.
As a student at Surrey, I very much enjoy my student life here. I am often rushing between Taekwondo class, painting and drawing class and language class on campus. I love all the classes where I can learn so many more things outside academic studies as well as experiencing the multi-cultural atmosphere here.
In the future, I hope I will be doing research in academia. With a degree from University of Surrey, it will help me to open up such a path but it is the whole experience that I have gained that will lead me through.
