4.30 - 5.00 pm:
The KPIs of an MBA Program

Speaker: Mr. Soon Thiam Lam

Presented by: University of Strathclyde

Since the 90s the business world has seen an increasing number of senior executives obtaining an MBA qualification. This has become even more pronounced in the new century. This is evidenced by the fact that currently almost forty MBA programs are registered with the Ministry of Higher Education (MOHE). In view of widespread desire and necessity for the MBA program for senior employees we need to view some of the key indicators or KPI of an MBA that potential candidates look for before embarking on one. Foremost among the indicators is the accreditation of the MBA i.e. whether it has AMBA, EQUIS or AACSB the three leading accreditation bodies. Closely related to this is the Ranking of the Business School that offers the MBA program. The ranking that is usually relied on is the Financial Times Survey ranking although there are some other bodies that also conduct similar surveys. Potential applicants often are interested to know about the cost of the program and if they can get any financial assistance. Together with this they would be interested to know about the teaching academia as well as the program contents. Finally a prospect may want to see if he/she has the necessary working experience to benefit from the MBA program. Some candidates may want to know if they are too young or too old for an MBA. Well the average age of the MBA student in six leading Business Schools is 27 to 31.

About the speaker:
Soon Thiam Lam is currently the CEO of CDC Management Development (M) Sdn Bhd and Managing Director/Senior Consultant of CDC Consulting Sdn Bhd. CDC Management Development is the International Partner of University of Strathclyde which runs the Strathclyde International MBA programme in Malaysia. Mastering your future

Speaker: Assoc. Prof. Dr Foo Yin Fah

Presented by: Sunway University College

There are many reasons why a person may want to pursue a post-graduate qualification, particularly in the area of business. During times of economic downturn, pursuing a Master’s degree may enable a retrenched employee to re-tool and re-skill so that they can widen their technical competencies and skills to enable them to move into other industries and start new careers. Employees may also want to pursue a specialised Master’s degree to keep abreast with current developments in specific technical areas within their current field of work. And there are some who pursue Master’s degrees to advance in their present careers as managers. With the plethora of postgraduate degrees available in the market today, choosing the right programme is a difficult task. As postgraduate programmes often involve significant investments in time and money, serious consideration needs to be given to issues such as the quality of the programme as well as its cost and mode of delivery. But what is certain in this age of constant and rapid change, where knowledge becomes obsolete very quickly and new knowledge is being created, is that it is critical that we are proactive in mastering our future.
