Experienced project professionals are needed to manage challenging projects locally and around the world. Project management skills are needed in enhancing the way projects are handled especially in the fast moving business world, i.e. efficiently and effectively. To meet the increasing need for good project management skills, Universiti Tunku Abdul Rahman (UTAR) launched its Master of Science (Project Management) (MScPM) at UTAR Kuala Lumpur Campus.
The Master of Science (Project Management) (MScPM) qualification is meant for candidates from various academic backgrounds seeking senior and top management positions in public and private enterprise. This programme is offered under the Faculty of Engineering and Science.
The programme aims to cater not only for candidates from the industry who are keen in continuous learning and upgrading their knowledge in the field of project management but also for fresh graduates who wish to enhance and equip themselves with the skills and knowledge of project management before embarking into a career.
Mr Chia Fah Choy, the Head of Programme of Master of Science of Faculty of Engineering and Science, says, "Project management is applying knowledge, skills, tools and techniques to a broad range of activities in order to meet goals on time and budget. Following structured project management methods such as detailed evaluation of scope and budget, ongoing risk management and measurement of project results will enables companies to predict and mitigate risks, better manages costs and delivery quality results and institutionalized knowledge. These will provide organizations a powerful competitive advantage. A recent report from the Economist Intelligence Unit which was based on a survey of 213 senior executives and project managers worldwide disclosed that although 90% of respondents say project management is either critical or somewhat important, yet nearly one-half (49%) only follow formal project management practices on large or complex projects."
The UTAR’s MScPM is a contemporary and challenging programme comprising of six core subjects including research methodology, four elective subjects and a Project. Throughout the programme, candidates will be encouraged to participate in enhancement courses such as a Project/Dissertation Writing Workshop, attend seminars and talks conducted by industry practitioners.
The coursework-based MSc Project Management programme comprises of a coursework component and a project. Satisfactory completion of both components is required for the award of the degree.
The coursework component consists of a number of subjects assessed by a combination of continuous assessment and examinations. Continuous assessment includes individual and group assignment work, case-studies and tests. Some subjects may include additional practical components.
Several interesting subjects are incorporated into the coursework; including, Project Framework, Processes, Integration and Scope Management; Project Time, Cost and Quality Management; Project Human Resource Management; Project Risk and Procurement Management; and Project Knowledge and Communication Management
There would be several elective subjects like Workplace Safety and Health, Construction Cost Planning and Control, Project Financial Management, Information Security over Internet, Sustainability and the Built Environment, Economic Theory and the Construction Industry, Strategic Management, Operations Research, and Renewable Energy.
The medium of instruction is in English, and the duration allowed for this master’s degree is two to six years.
UTAR currently, in its eighth year of operation, has over 16,000 students, staff strength of over 1,300 academic and administrative staff, and offers a comprehensive array of 89 programmes: 10 Doctorates, 16 Masters, 53 Bachelors (Honours), 4 Foundation Certificates, and 6 Degrees offered in the evening and weekend spread over ten faculties in four Campus locations – UTAR Perak Campus, UTAR Petaling Jaya Campus, UTAR Kuala Lumpur Campus and UTAR Sungai Long Campus.
UTAR’s next intake will commence in May 2010.
