Economics

Economics aims to explain the interaction of economic agents via the analysis of the production, distribution, management and consumption of goods and services. The purpose of economic analysis can be both descriptive (‘what is?’) and prescriptive (‘what ought to be?’). Knowledge of economics and economics analysis methods is applied in various domains, such as business, government, policy-making, science, education and politics.

An MEc (Master of Economics) degree requires a bachelor’s degree with a minimum of CGPA 3.0 or equivalent, and sufficient knowledge in the field of economics or in quantitative oriented fields. Core courses include advanced macroeconomics, advanced microeconomics, philosophy and methodology of research, and applied econometrics.

Optional courses may include:
  • Economic Development & Planning
  • Trade and Growth
  • Financial Markets & Institutions
  • Economic Policy Analysis
  • Comparative Economic Systems
  • Industrial Organization
  • Applied Macroeconomics
  • Money and Finance in Economic Development
  • International Trade and Environment
  • Sustainability and Growth
  • Islamic Banking and Finance
  • Advanced International Trade

It is also possible for candidates to apply to do the MEc by dissertation only. This is only open to graduates with exceptionally good qualifications (first class honours or CGPA of at least 3.7) who have experience in academic writing (proof of publication is necessary). This programme requires students to submit a dissertation of not exceeding 60,000 words at the conclusion of the course.

It is important that you have a good foundation in mathematics, as econometrics and statistics are increasingly sought after by employers. In your MEc, you should aim to achieve excellence in the technical and mathematical aspects without ignoring macroeconomics and theory. Also, do seriously consider going on to do a PhD, as this will be an added advantage when aiming for the top banking and financial jobs in the market.
