Master of Science in Biotechnology
Besides gaining theoretical knowledge, you will be trained to operate and maintain scientific equipment. You should already possess good practical skills enabling you to conduct basic guided research and laboratory work. The MSc should then equip you with the improved skills to undertake extensive and exhaustive laboratory practicals and independent research.
 
Depending on the institution, core research areas would comprise of subjects such as molecular genetics polymorphisms, population genetics, DNA forensics, genetic engineering/DNA recombinant technology, biological energy production, biological waste treatment kinetics and modeling, bioremediation, fermentation technology, phytochemical compounds from herbs, composting technology, biofuels, and organic farming.
 
Elective research areas would for example consist of cell biology, developmental biology, genetics, microbiology, plant molecular biology, cell culture technology, fermentation technology, and bioprocessing.
 
The duration of study for full-time students is usually 18 months to three years, and two to four years for part-time students. Applicants are required to have an approved undergraduate degree with honours in the area of biotechnology, biology, chemistry, biochemistry, microbiology, genetics etc, with a minimum of 60% or a classification of second lower. A score of 550 (TOEFL), 6.0 band (IELTS) or other proof of English proficiency is required.
 
Master of Science in Biotechnology with Business Management
The MSc should improve your theoretical knowledge in a range of subjects and improve your technical and practical skills. Moreover, for the research project, you are required to design and conduct research in a given area, and propose a way to bring the final product into the market.  You will need to write a business proposal at the end of the project, which includes budgeting, expenditure estimations, capital investments, profits and losses, and sales and market demands. 
 
This will enable you to appreciate your research objectives, the timeline and time management of their studies, and major project milestones. These business and administration skills will be invaluable to you when you go into industry.
