Employment options for ICT graduates
In Malaysia, postgraduates accounted for 10% of employees in MSC companies and 22% of employees in non-MSC companies.
In 2007-2008, a survey conducted in Selangor, Johor and Penang showed that ICT Master’s holders were earning, on average, RM 1200 per month more than holders of bachelor’s degrees.
It is advisable that you have a few years of working experience at an entry level position before thinking about doing a Master’s. One reason is that you will have a better idea of what you want to specialise in. Secondly, after a few years of experience, you will know what skills are lacking in the marketplace. You will thus obtain maximum mileage from your postgraduate studies by targeting the relevant skills to be acquired.
ICT as an industry may be crudely broken down into the hardware, software and network sectors. Within these sectors, there are various subsectors and a multitude of job descriptions to follow. For example, in a 2009 Frost and Sullivan report, the most popular subsectors were:

- Technical Support (4.8%)
- System administrator (4.8%)
- Supervisor/Team lead in software (4.7%)
- Project manager in software (4.3%)
