Creative multimedia

The Malaysian creative multimedia industry recorded an estimated RM 9.4 billion in revenue in 2008. It is simply one of the most exciting fields that has moved away from the traditional competencies of formal ICT training, to incorporate required skills in acting, drawing, audio and artistry.

In 2010, there were 250 MSC-status creative multimedia companies in Malaysia, involved mainly in:
  • Post production
  • Animation
  • Game development
  • E-learning
  • Mobile content
  • Interactive content
Bear in mind that in this field, as with many other creative industries, you are judged as much on your portfolio, experience and creativity as your qualifications. . However, even though content development is as much an artistic as a technical discipline, a postgraduate degree should ideally add to your existing skillsets. For example, 3D animation, post-production, sound, virtual reality design, and interactive media are technical specialisations that you should be actively considering.

An MBA in multimedia management would even incorporate marketing, project and financial management skills into your existing technical abilities. This programme is aimed at students from a variety of backgrounds and experience who wish to further their understanding and skills in multimedia, web design and production without concentrated emphasis on technology-related issues.

There are relatively few postgraduate degrees available in Malaysia. Generally a Bachelor’s degree with second class honours or with CGPA 2.8 is required. If your undergraduate degree is not related to your chosen postgraduate programme, relevant working experience should be demonstrated. Masters’ and PhDs are generally awarded on the basis of thesis, research and coursework.

Some potential employers would be:
  • Production houses
  • Animation agencies
  • Gaming development studios
  • Universities
