Postgraduate study options in business

Due to its popularity, business programmes are offered by many institutions both locally and overseas. Programmes are available in coursework, research and mixed modes and can be undertaken on a full-time or part-time basis, or even via distance and online learning. The duration required to complete the course varies greatly, ranging from one to seven years, depending on your major, qualification level and chosen mode of study.

The most popular postgraduate courses are probably the MBA and the DBA. These degrees are thought of by many companies as studies into scientific approaches for management, and their holders are widely held in high esteem. Holders of MBAs and DBAs could delve into business themselves but most would branch into consultancy.

Business, management and administration are arguably the most wide-ranging of all possible graduate careers, with many functions across almost all industries and services. A natural career option for many economics and business students, it is also open to candidates of any discipline who meet the criteria.

The basic requirement for admission into a postgraduate programme is a relevant bachelor’s degree (for Master’s level) or Master’s degree (for doctoral studies). Most business-related courses are designed to prepare the student for management roles, and therefore may require you to have a minimum of two to five years of working experience.

To keep students in touch with current trends, challenges and happenings in the industry, many programmes are case study and discussion-based. They also involve built-in industrial training opportunities where you will need to take on real-life projects for companies. Some institutions also provide networking opportunities for students to allow them to share their experiences and expand their contacts. Hence you may also need to produce reference letters from a lecturer and/or your employer as proof of your character and ability to keep up with the syllabus and contribute to the learning experience of your classmates as well.

Professional courses
If you are looking for specific skills and knowledge to give you that slight edge over your peers or recognition for your competencies without taking too much of your time or focus from work, professional qualifications are a viable alternative. Bodies that offer professional accounting qualifications in Malaysia include ACCA, CIMA, CPA Australia and ICAEW.  Professional qualifications in business include the Certified Financial Planner (CFP), Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) as well as qualifications from the Institute of Chartered Secretaries and Administrators.
