Studying in Germany
Germany is home to close to 82 million people, making it the most populated country in Europe. Historically known as the land of poets and thinkers, it has made a name for itself though its contributions to philosophy and poetry.
German programmes are known to be highly structured, content-heavy, rigorous and intensive. The international recognition of German university degrees in recent years is good news for both German and international students, as it enables them to complete their degrees quicker and have more opportunities in the international job market.
Visa requirements
To apply for a student visa you will need to submit the following to the German embassy:
- A valid passport and recent passport photos
- Proof of admission from a recognised German institution
- Evidence of previous academic achievements
- Proof of sufficient funds for one year’s stay (minimum of €500 a month).
Upon arriving in Germany, you will need to apply for a residence permit at the Foreigners’ Affairs Office. Required documents include:
- A valid visa
- A valid passport and three passport-size photographs
- Completed application form
- Health insurance
- Proof of physical examination
- Copy of rental agreement or letter from landlord.
German students visas and residence permits need to be renewed annually.
Language of instruction
German and English. Students need to prove their proficiency in the German language by taking the Test Deutsch als Fremdsprache (Test for German as a foreign language). To find out more, log on to www.goethe.de/ins/my/kua/lrn/prf/enindex.htm.
Work options
International students are allowed to work for 90 days or 180 half-days annually without a work permit. Certain Federal states only allow students to work during the summer vacation period, though some areas may permit an additional 10 hours per week.
Living expenses
You will need to budget about €700 a month to cover all basic necessities such as food and accommodation .
Health insurance
All students below the age of 30 are insured at a cost of less than €50 a month with public health insurance companies. All doctor visits, hospital stays and treatment are free of charge. Students above 30 are not entitled to the student rate and may purchase insurance from public and private health insurance companies.
