Application FAQ

How do I apply?

To apply for the majority of courses in Malaysia, you should complete the relevant institution’s official application forms, usually available in hard copy or in PDF format from their websites. Submit the forms directly to the Postgraduate Admissions office or equivalent, along with your previous degree transcripts, any relevant certifications as well as the application fee where appropriate.

There are some variations from this, depending on the postgraduate course you are planning to embark on. Whatever it is, the best thing to do is to check with individual institutions to find out what type of application they will accept.

What are the typical entry requirements?

Candidates normally require a basic undergraduate degree from a recognised university to get onto a Masters programme. If you are planning to get onto a PhD programme, you will need a Masters degree.

For more technical Masters programmes, you will need the relevant undergraduate qualifications in the same field. For example, if you want to pursue a Master of Science (MSc) in a particular area of engineering, you will need an engineering degree.

Some institutions will admit working individuals without any undergraduate qualifications into their Masters programme; however, candidates who qualify are usually those with managerial level positions and work experience.

If you are planning to apply for a highly ranked Masters programme, the competition will be very tough as places are more competitive and admission criteria more strict. If you have a first class or second upper honours undergraduate degree, you will stand a better chance.

What is the closing date for applications?

Some application dates may be as early as November of the year prior to entry. There are also an increasing number of programmes starting in January as well as programmes commencing annually in September. This means it is important to find out the specific closing dates of any programme you are interested in applying for.

What about an interview? Will I have to undergo one?  If so, how can I prepare in advance?

For some programmes, candidates will be interviewed as part of the selection procedure. To be better prepared, do your research on the industry towards which the programme is geared. You can expect to be asked about the field of study and the relevant industry. You may also be asked about your previous education and work experience,  as well as why you wish to undertake the programme you have applied for.
